Leadership for Information Professionals

Course Description:
The course will cover the definitions and meanings of leadership, various leadership theories, and practical use of leadership skills in various situations; such as conflict management, risk taking, creativity, sexual harassment, diversity, and others.

*Attendance for all 5 days of class is mandatory as well as remaining for the entire day.

Course Objectives:

  • Students will develop knowledge of the evolution of leadership
  • Students will gain a greater understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses and leadership potential
  • Students will participate in group activities and discussion related to the theory and concepts presented

Requirements:

Class Participation (10%) - students are expected to participate in class discussions, group work, and assignments. Attendance is mandatory.

Daily Journal (10%) - students are expected to keep a daily journal on reflections of what they've learned in class, personal goals, and questions for future classes. Have available the last day of class (December 21st)

Leadership Development Plan (30%) - a major class session will be devoted to strategic planning and the development of individual career plans. Final Plan due January 4th by electronic submission to Lisa Hussey.

Oral Presentation (20%) - based on impressions or goals from the daily journals on any topic regarding leadership. Should be 5 minutes. Points will be taken off for being under or over the time limit. Presentations will be done on Friday, December 21st,

Major Assignment (30%) - Choose a leader and critique his/her leadership style. 7-10 pages double spaced and 12 point font (preferably Times New Roman). Points will be taken off for being under or over the page limit. Students are expected to follow the MLA or APA style manual. We expect an interesting essay. Due January 4th by electronic submission to Lisa Hussey in MS Word. If you do not have access to MS Word, speak to Lisa for other arrangements.
