COURSE DESCRIPTION

"Libraries for America’s Business and Industry." 3 credit hours.

What will we be covering in this course?

This course will examine the history, types of libraries, staffing, development, and future of company libraries in the United States. Specific attention will be given to examples of highly successful models as well as those corporate information centers which have encountered problems. Research on the value of information professionals and the perceived value of corporate libraries are examined in detail. Methodologies to evaluate the company library will be discussed. Comparative data on corporate libraries in the U.S., Europe, and Japan will be considered.

How the class will be taught?

This is an intensive one week course that begins with a brief history of business and the history of company library development in the U.S. The instructor will cover these topics as well as the development of the Special Libraries Association and its impact on the field.

This class is taught at SIRIS in a classroom with one day set aside for visits to company libraries in the area. Students will work together in groups to study and report on successful company libraries as well as those libraries that have closed Our classroom experience will be augmented with “live” audio visits by company librarians across the U.S. and a series of videos.

As individuals, each student will complete two short papers during the week. One is due on Wednesday and the other on Friday.

All required reading – articles, cases and reports – will be supplied by the instructor at no cost to the students. All course work will be completed during the week and nothing will be due after the class concludes on Friday.

Since change is so common in work place, change will be part of the class as well.

Students will be expected to work on individual assignments and to work as part of a team. The readings are supplied to assist you with this subject and are most reasonable in number and size. No one has ever had a problem with the work load in this class. The aim of the course is for you to learn about a subject. So, you are in for an experience, for change, for new material and for a week of snacks and learning.
