Technology Workshops Information Sheet  

Technology is an important part of the SIRLS program. Technology requirements for the program are listed on the SIRLS webpage.

IRLS 504 begins on Tuesday, January 3, with a required Introduction to Web-Based Resources. 1:00 pm ­ 5:00 pm, Location: 112A ELEC (Enter from ILC (Integrated Learning Center ) Courtyard.

In addition, there is an optional "technology readiness" workshop for those people who are unfamiliar with or uncertain about technology or who want extra help. Technology Readiness: 9 am - noon; Location TBA REGISTRATION NECESSARY. Please email SIRLS, sirls@email.arizona.edu, to reserve a space. We need to know how many people are coming.  

Below are more detailed descriptions of both workshops.    

1. Technology Readiness (Optional); Tuesday, Jan 3, 9am - noon . Location TBA. Register for 504 at SIRLS office from 8 am - 9 am    

This hands-on workshop covers basic functions of a computer and the Internet. It is designed to introduce you to some basic concepts of computing and the productivity software of Word and PowerPoint. The workshop will conclude with an introduction to the Internet and the Internet resources available at the University.

1. Computers 101

Based on the participants experience, we will briefly explore the basic concepts of computing. We will cover an overview of the different computer operating systems, where and how to purchase a computer, and working with files and folders.

2. Ten Things Every Student Should Know about Microsoft Word

This portion of the workshop focuses on ten functions in Microsoft Word that will help you avoid retyping or reformatting your papers. The functions to be covered have been selected as being those that most people don¹t know about, but really should. The presenter has gathered them after working with graduate students and discovering the functions that students wish they knew as they worked on papers and presentations.

3. PowerPoint Do's and Don'ts (Note: Students will be preparing a PowerPoint Presentation during the 504 class)

This portion of the workshop focuses on what you should and should not do when preparing a PowerPoint Presentation. Base on your previous experience, we will first explore the creation of a PowerPoint presentation and then review tips that will help you create better presentations.

4. Five Things You Should Know About the Internet, E-Mail, and Computer Systems at the U.

This portion of the workshop focuses on the University¹s e-mail and other computer resources. We will explore some basic tips on working with each.    

2. Introduction to Web-Based Resources: REQUIRED.

1:-00 pm ­ 5:00 pm, Location: 112A ELEC (Enter from ILC Courtyard) This workshop focuses on the web resources that you will be using throughout your SIRLS program. We will begin with a discussion of Desire2Learn (D2L), SIRLS primary course management system, and then discuss the program's portfolio requirements, and finish by building a set of initial web pages.

1. Introduction to D2L

This portion of the workshop introduces you to the basic functions of D2L, the University's course management system. You will use this system in the majority of your courses.

2. The SIRLS ePortfolio project

This portion of the workshop introduces you to the SIRLS ePortfolio project. The project consists of two components; the Program ePortfolio and the Professional ePortfolio. The Program ePortfolio is required of all SIRL's graduates. The Professional ePortfolio is provided as a means for you to express your learning in the program to potential employers. Both ePortfolios are designed to help you monitor and enhance your learning within the program.

3. Creating Web Pages

This portion of the workshop introduces you to basic web page creation. We will explore creating individual web pages, linking those pages together, storing artifacts, and basic file management.
