IRLS 504 FOUNDATIONS OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES
Winter 2005/2006
Residency
READING ASSIGNMENTS
The primary text for this course is Richard Rubin, Foundations of Library and Information Science, 2nd edition, 2004. This book is intended to be background for the class. The pages below are required; however, it is strongly suggested that you read in other areas in the book that interest you.
Note that there is quite a bit of reading and more importantly independent learning expected of you from December 19 through January 2. Your first challenge as a graduate student at SIRLS will be to pace yourself during the reading period when so much personal and family activity vies with your graduate study and learning.
For each assignment below, a reading report is due. These reading reports are intended to help you organize your own learning from Rubin in each area. These reports do not need to be lengthy, but they do need to represent the key points that you have pulled from Rubin and that you want to remember.
Tip for reading reports: Rather than copy out Rubin’s key points or definitions word for word, try paraphrasing them in words that make sense to you. Write them so that you can read them the night before we discuss these topics during the residency and refresh your memory about the key points.
Turn in one copy of each reading report at the start of class on January 4. Keep a copy of all reading reports for filing in your binders.
