Communications

There are a series of communication techniques we will use in this class.

World Wide Web (WWW)

The Web will be the primary medium by which the "lectures" and related material will be presented to you. Each of you should have access to a graphical Web Browser. This course is optimized for use by Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape 3.0. You may download either of these browsers. Each has some minor quirks in comparison, so do not expect your colleague who is using a different browser to have exactly the same page display. The important point is that the content is the same.

"Lectures" will be available at the beginning of each week. The first three weeks of lectures will be available to you without a password. Following the third week, you will need a password to access the lectures. This is to insure that only the persons registered in the class are receiving the class. We will supply each registered student with a password with which you will access the class.

Email

Email is critical in this course. If there is a problem, I expect you to talk to me about the problem and the best way to do that is via email. My email address is strewn throughout this syllabus, but here it is again: cdh@u.arizona.edu. I will use email to send materials back to you. Email is the primary person-to-person communication mode in this course.

Listserv

The primary method of me communicating an email message to the entire class at one time is via the class listserv, lis195. The one critical point to concern yourself with in dealing with the listserv is that you are literally shouting to the entire class. Think of it as putting a notice up on a bulletin board for the entire class to view. This is the primary group interaction tool in this course. To use the listserv you must be subscribed. For the first three weeks, the listserv will be open; after the first three weeks, it will be closed. Subscribing to the listserv is very simple. The key is remembering that you are "corresponding" with a machine, not a person.

Subscribing to the LIS195 Listserv

You will send an email message to the automatic registration machine here at the University of Arizona. Here's how to do that assuming that you are now on line and ready to send an email message.

  1. Address the email message to: listserv@listserv.arizona.edu
  2. DO NOT place anything in the subject field
  3. The text of the message should be: subscribe lis195 (type your name here without the parentheses)
  4. Send the message

You should receive confirmation that you are subscribed to the listserv.

Using the Listserv

Using the listserv is a lot like using email. If you wish to post something to the list, you send a message to

FTP

There will be a series of machines available to you for ftp access. The main ftp machine will be lion.sir.arizona.edu. There will be a special LIS195 directory available to you. Other machines will be placed in service for ftp access and you will be informed of these during the course of the semester.

FAX

You may have need to fax something to me. If this is the case, the School's fax number is 520-621-3279. Use this medium judiciously. We receive a LOT of fax traffic that can be sent no other way than fax. Mixing with this material is not where you want your critical request to end up. Use it if you must, but be careful with it.

Telephone

If you want to speak in real-time and in person, you may certainly call me. The telephone number is 520-621-3566. I spend a good deal of time out of the office so be prepared to be told I am not available at the exact time you call.

US Post

It does work! We have a direct drop from the USPO which shortens by at least a day the time it takes to get a letter to me. (We do not use the University of Arizona Campus Mail for our USPO service.) Use it if you wish.

In Person

Anytime I am in the office, I am fair game. That also goes for the times I am wandering around outside my office. Please stop and check with Sue Fitzner, the School's Administrative Associate, to see if I am available.

Making Appointments

If you wish to make an appointment, send an email message to Sue Fitzner. Sue keeps my calendar and schedules my appointments.
