Requirements |
The course requirements are
The single author coursework requirement will be two papers of 4 to 6 pages each. The group coursework requirement will be one small project undertaken by you working in teams. Each project will consider an issue, say Freedom of Information, and research or devise arguments in favor of a position regarding that issue. Then the resulting material will be delivered in a form that the whole class can consider and discuss (for example, as an HTML web page). The final examination will be a take-home exam of three hours duration. It will be distributed electronically about Wednesday May xxx and has to be returned by Wednesday May xxx. The single author coursework will count for 40% of the final grade, the group author coursework 20%, and the final paper for 40% of the grade. The 1997-8 University of Arizona General Academic Manual, p.23 reads The grade of I may be awarded only at the end of a semester, when all but a minor portion of the course work has been satisfactorily completed. The grade of I is not to be awarded when the student is expected to repeat the course; in such a case the grade of E must be assigned. Thus, for example, a mark of Internal: 82 A- External: A on a piece of work would be seen by outsiders as an A; however, the A- will convey to you that the work can be improved. |

There will be a listserv for this course. You should join it in January 2002 Most of you will be familiar with listservs. But if not: there are two email addresses you need to deal with. The first is for joining or leaving a particular group. The second is for sending messages to a group that you have joined To join, send an email message to listserv@listserv.arizona.edu with 'Subscribe IRLS520' in the body of the message. Then to send messages to all of us, send to IRLS520@listserv.arizona.edu. A trap for young players-- remember that if you read a message from a listserv then hit 'reply 'on your emailer you will be replying to all other members of the listserv (this may not be what you intend, you may wish to send a reply only to the person posting (in which case extract their email address and go from there)). |

GAT |
The GATs for this course have yet to be chosen. Please favor GATs over myself for all your questions except those on central academic issues. I believe that faculty, myself in this instance, should do all the teaching and assessing, and that is my practice. But it is viable with the student numbers that I am facing only if I am not distracted by concerns that the GATs could answer (such as why your Web Browser on your computer is not working properly). |
