Introduction to Microcomputers

Course Goals:

The goal of Introduction to Microcomputers is to help you to learn how to better utilize the computing facilities available to you. Five major areas will be covered:
  1. Operating Systems
  2. Internet and World Wide Web
  3. Word Processing
  4. Databases
  5. Spreadsheets

Grading:

Grades will be based on your performance on the following tasks:
  1. Creation of a directory tree on a floppy disk--5 pts.
  2. Setting up your address book in Pine--5 pts.
  3. Joining and participating in the class email list and ARIZSLS--10 pts.
  4. Creating and mounting a homepage--15 pts.
  5. Doing an Internet search on a topic of personal interest--15 pts.
  6. FTPing two documents on a topic of personal interest--10 pts.
  7. Writing a resume using Word for Windows--20 pts.
  8. Completing a database search test--20 pts.
  9. Creating a spreadsheet--20 pts.
  10. Set up a presentation using Powerpoint--20 pts.
  11. Set up rooms on Elysium with exits and automessages--20 pts.
  12. Your choice with instructor's approval--20 pts.
Everyone will be expected to complete items 1-6. The balance of points may be earned by completing any two or more of the remaining items.
