LiS 613 Systems Analysis and Evaluation
Summer Session II, 1996

This course will examine methods of retrieving, organizing, presenting and managing information to meet the needs of diverse users. Though the course will include discussion of information systems in general, content will focus on design, analysis and control of electronic information systems. This course will include analysis and use of various Internet resources.

Lab sessions will enable students to develop the skills needed for full participation in the class. A high level of computer technical expertise is not a prerequisite for this class. Students are required to obtain computer accounts enabling them to access e-mail and to publish World Wide Web (WWW) home pages.

Readings

Required readings are included in the LIS 613 coursepack and in the required text. All students are expected to prepare to discuss in class topics related to assigned readings. In class quizzes will relate directly to reading assignments.

Course Content

This course will cover the following topics in the following order. Development of technical expertise needed to complete course requirements will be integrated with course content.

Course Requirements -- Grading

Students will complete the following class requirements. Each requirement will be weighted as specified in calculating final grades.

Pretest and Posttest (0%)

These "tests" will be completed in class in order to offer students a means to gauge their learning progress. Though required, they will not be graded.

Evaluation of WWW Pages (20%)

Students will evaluate five WWW pages. These sites and their written evaluations will form the basis of a subject specialty WWW page to be developed by the student. Details regarding the site evaluation process and how this activity relates to the personal WWW site development assignment will be provided in class.

Personal WWW Site (25%)

Each student will develop a personal WWW information structure (at least a portion of which will relate to the subject area specialty chosen for the WWW site evaluation assignments described above). Details will be provided in class.

Research Paper (25%)

Students will complete a research paper related to one or more of the subjects covered in class. Topics must be approved by the instructor. Details will be provided in class.

In Class Quizzes on Readings and Discussions (10%)

Final Exam (20%)

Attendance

Students are required to attend classes. Students are responsible for notifying the instructor when illness or other extenuating circumstances prevent him or her from attending class. Requests for making up missed tests and quizzes will not be granted without such notification.
