COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The challenge of developing principles, codes and systems through which to organize, retrieve and access information and knowledge continues to intrigue library and information science professionals. After exploring existing descriptive and classification-based structures within this course, prospective information professionals will be better equipped to create, expand, maintain and manage printed and electronic systems which provide control and access to information.

PRIMARY COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. To identify, define and describe the basic concepts and terms which are related to descriptive
  2. cataloging, classification schemes, subject access and authority control.
  3. To demonstrate synthesis of the principles discussed by preparing original cataloging records for the following types of resources:
  4. To demonstrate critical thinking skills concerning current issues facing cataloging, indexing and classification professionals.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Students are responsible for:
  1. the contents of this syllabus
  2. completing all readings and assignments and exams as outlined on the CLASS CALENDAR,
  3. informed participation in class discussions.
Although the instructor isn't an ogre and will attempt to be flexible and empathetic, late assignments will be penalized with points off your grade, (See LATE ASSIGNMENTS), since we have a great deal to do in five short weeks!! In addition to the REQUIRED TEXTS, you are expected to have read the assigned readings in your course packet and on reserve prior to each class and to come prepared for discussion. Readings will be included on your exams.

CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION 10%

FINAL EXAM 15%

GRADING:

Letter grades will be awarded on the following basis:

90-100=A

80-89 = B

70-79 = C

>70 = F
