LIS 506: Research Methods I

Fall, 1996 Syllabus

Please note that this is an archival copy only. All links to lectures and other material specific to the course for the fall, 1996 semester have been removed. This page, and the pages still linked to it, are FYI only and not to be construed as relevant to any LIS506 course other than the one taught in the Fall, 1996 semester. Ok, it will probably be partially relevant to LIS506 as taught by Professor Seavey in the future, but I wouldn't try to generalize beyond that.

The links that are active work as of 12/17/96. They will not be updated until the next time Professor Seavey teaches this course.

Information about registration, etc. is available here.

Research is fundamentally a state of mind involving continual reexamination of the doctrines and axioms upon which current thought and action are based. It is, therefore, critical of existing practices.

The maddening thing about research was that most answers just meant more questions.... .

    Introduction

Welcome to the syllabus for LIS 506.

This document is much more than a syllabus... it will also serve to introduce and archive much of the information that will be used in our class.

    Course Description

This is an entirely virtual class. Thus, we will be utilizing several of the tools of the Internet to teach an introduction to research methods currently used in the study of library and information science. Through a combination of this Web page, e-mail, talkers and other tools, we hope to provide all students, no matter where they are geographically located, with a substantive, and rigorous learning experience.

    What is Research??

Please note that research, as taught in this class, does not mean finding things in a library. Research is a process of theory building and hypothesis testing, the sifting and winnowing of ideas that leads to new knowledge, and new interpretations of old knowledge. In the end it is a search for truth.
