Introduction to Microcomputers

Course Goals:
The goal of Introduction to Microcomputers is to help you to learn how to better utilize the computing facilities available to you. Five major areas will be covered:
- Operating Systems
- Internet and World Wide Web
- Word Processing
- Databases
- Spreadsheets
Grading:
Grades will be based on your performance on the following tasks:
- Creation of a directory tree on a floppy disk--5 pts.
- Setting up your address book in Pine--5 pts.
- Joining and participating in the class email list and ARIZSLS--10 pts.
- Creating and mounting a homepage--15 pts.
- Doing an Internet search on a topic of personal interest--15 pts.
- FTPing two documents on a topic of personal interest--10 pts.
- Writing a resume using Word for Windows--20 pts.
- Completing a database search test--20 pts.
- Creating a spreadsheet--20 pts.
- Set up a presentation using Powerpoint--20 pts.
- Set up rooms on Elysium with exits and automessages--20 pts.
- Your choice with instructor's approval--20 pts.
Everyone will be expected to complete items 1-6. The balance of points may be earned by completing any two or more of the remaining items.
The grading scale will be as follows:
- A 95 - 120 points
- B 85 - 94 points
- C 75 - 84 points
