Checklist & Deadlines for Getting Started

Step 1
In the months before coming to SIRLS
The School assumes that incoming students have basic computer skills. Not all students do, but it is an easy task to acquire them. Please review our prerequisites.
Step 2

Before you register

Your UA NetID is your personal identifier for online services at the University of Arizona such as email, D2L, registration, and parking.

Step 3
After getting your
UA NetID

You must have an active UA NetID prior to establishing your UA email account. All official school business will only be emailed to this account, so create it as soon as possible and check it often. Send an email to Polly Lindeman Mitchell (plmitch@email.arizona.edu) from your NEW UA email account.

Step 4

Officially register for your first class,
IRLS 504

Course registration for IRLS504 and your other courses will be completed through StudentLink.
Here are links for the Registration times for Summer and Fall.

Twenty-four hours after registering, confirm in StudentLink that you are registered for IRLS504. It is your responsibility to check StudentLink often throughout your SIRLS career for registration and financial information.

Step 5
When your UA email is seactivated

A CatCard number is necessary to check books out of the UA Library, and is your official identification to be on the UA campus and in UA buildings. The CatCard is as important as your driver's license or picture identification. You will be in UA building after hours during 504 so you need to get the CatCard. CatCards cost $25 and are mandatory for campus and distance student identification and use of UA services.

For those of you in Tucson, get your CatCard in person at the Student Union-BEFORE 504 BEGINS.

For those students living out of the Tucson area, send an email to Polly Lindeman Mitchell (plmitch@email.arizona.edu) from your NEW UA email account and you will be issued a virtual CatCard number to use only until you arrive on campus.

Step 6
Before coming to campus

Desire to Learn (D2L) is the online course software that will be used during the on-campus portion of the class, as well as future distance IRLS courses you may take. The D2L link will appear in StudentLink when the class site is open. Ensure that you can successfully log into D2L when it becomes available, approximately one week before the on-campus component of IRLS 504. A D2L tutorial is scheduled during the first day of classes.

All needed information will be available online at the IRLS 504 mini-site.

Step 7
As soon as possible
Have Your Textbooks in Hand

Purchase the required texts:

1. Rubin, R. (2004). Foundations of library and information science (2nd ed.). New York: Neal-Schuman Publishers. ISBN (1555705189)

2. Dority, G. K. (2006). Rethinking information work : A career guide for librarians and other information professionals. Westport, Conn: Libraries Unlimited. ISBN (159158180X)
