Event Title   Bootstrapping facets by revisiting the heritage of early document retrieval systems.
Abstract      Facets and facet analysis are an increasingly common part of the contemporary discourse surrounding access and discovery systems. These intuitively adaptable structures are often integrated into browsing and searching tools for e-commerce sites, digital museum portals, and online library catalogs. References to the heritage of early document retrieval systems, like the Universal Decimal Classification, and the indexing systems that were tested as part of the Cranfield studies, are rarely part of this discussion. This omission obscures the fact that facets as an information retrieval construct necessarily arise from practice, from observation, and from use. Robust and fully faceted information infrastructures require clearly articulated principles that are anchored in lessons drawn from the success and failures of early implementations.

Internship and Job Fair

Notes  On Wednesday, March 26, the University of Arizona School of Information Resources and Library Science (SIRLS) is hosting an Internship and Job Fair. Sponsors of this event are the UA Student Chapter of the Special Libraries Association and the SIRLS Library Student Organization. We are inviting representatives of libraries and other organizations interested in providing internships for SIRLS students. Also, the scope of the event has been expanded to include full-time or part-time employment opportunities of potential interest to current students or to graduates from the program who have earned their MLS degrees. The two student organizations will be promoting this event to all current students and recent graduates. At past events many students have taken advantage of this timely opportunity to discuss future internships and job opportunities with representatives of participating organizations. Students planning to enroll in a summer internship must submit their applications to SIRLS by May 1.

March 31, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the William B. Neff Conference Attendance Award, awarded to a student member of the Museums, Arts and Humanities Division of the Special Libraries Association.  The award consists of a stipend of up to $1,000 toward the expense of conference attendance.  Any student member of the Division who is currently enrolled in a graduate library/information science program is eligible.  This award is specifically for conference attendance and the winner is required to attend the 2008 Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington. See http://units.sla.org/division/dmah/Neff%20Scholarship.htm for details.

March 31 2008 is the application deadline: As part of YALSA Unity: A Diversity Initiative, the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association (ALA), will offer two YALSA members with a diverse background a stipend to attend the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif., June 26-July 2. March 31st, 2008 is the deadline for Native American graduate students to apply for funds from the Graduate College, with these priorities: 1. Native American graduate students who are having trouble completing final projects, theses or dissertations for lack of money. Funds can be solicited to focus on writing during the summer months, and 2. Native American Graduate students who have an unforeseen financial need or emergency. April 11, 2008 is the deadline for applying for the Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship. The Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship was established to provide assistance to a student enrolled in a graduate master's degree program in library and information studies who intends to pursue a career in special librarianship. April 14, 2008 is the deadline to apply for The Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) 2008 Paul Evan Peters Fellowship. The Paul Evan Peters Fellowship was established to honor and perpetuate the memory of CNI's founding Executive Director.  The fellowship is awarded every two years to a student pursuing graduate studies in librarianship, the information sciences, or a closely related field, who demonstrates intellectual and personal qualities consistent with those of Paul Evan Peters. April 15, 2008 is the deadline for student category submissions in the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Call for Papers for its annual competition. The objectives of the contest are threefold: 1) to promote scholarship among practicing law librarians and in areas of interest to the profession; 2) to provide a creative outlet for law librarians and a forum for their scholarly activities; and 3) to recognize the scholarly efforts of established members, new members, and potential members of AALL. May 8, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the University of Southern Mississippi British Studies Program LIS 580/587, British Libraries and Information Centers, in summer 2008. Spend four weeks at Kings College in London and at the University of Edinburgh and earn 6 hours of graduate LIS credit. Students will experience on-site lectures by British librarians, archivists, and curators and have time to research approved topics on

June 15, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the student papers issue of DttP (Documents to the People), which is designed to showcase the talents and interests of current library school students. Papers should focus on substantive issues in government information at all levels of government (local, state, federal, international) librarianship. Style guidelines are available. DttP is a professional journal. Class papers which do not conform to editorial guidelines should be reformatted to receive consideration. Papers must be nominated and forwarded by a faculty member.
