Dr. Hong Cui's system demonstration submission is accepted by the Joint Conference for Digital Libraries 2008. Dr. Cui will demonstrate her most recent development on the MARTT system, which supports both supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms for semantic markup of taxonomic descriptions. Dr. Cui will present a related paper at the conference. Dr. Cui will also present at a digital flora workshop sponsored by Harvard University Herbaria on April 22-23. "We will discuss both short and long-term goals and priorities for the digital Flora ongoing. This will involve brainstorming on several key components including website design and functionality, work-flow management, mark-up, database issues, publishing on demand, and tying in other web services. As an outcome of this workshop, we would like to have two documents. The first would be a prioritized plan for the further development of the digital Flora and the second, a detailed outline for developing a proposal seeking funds at various potential agencies/foundations." And finally, Dr. Cui has received notification from The Flora of North America Project on a small grant ($7000) to support one student working with Dr. Cui over summer 2008 to create a model system for semantic markup of taxonomic descriptions. This system will be used to make information in FNA and other floras more accessible. It will also serve as a pilot system for securing research funds in the near future. |
