Event Title   An Eye on the World: Teaching American Children about Life in Other Lands, 1900-1925
Abstract      An important part of the work of early twentieth century children's librarians was to carefully select only the best books for inclusion in their collections. Among the books chosen were many intended to teach children about the world outside their own country. What were the cultural and moral "lessons" taught by the selected titles? Who was the intended audience for these books? In what ways did the presence of immigrant populations in urban centers influence the choice of
materials? This presentation will consider these questions in the
context of today's emphasis on multicultural literature in collections for youth.

Notes  Speaker: Tom Arviso Jr., Chief executive officer of the Navajo Times Publishing Company, Inc. and publisher of The Navajo Times. The Navajo Times, a weekly publication, is the largest Native American-owned newspaper with a circulation of 21,400 and more than 120,000 readers each week. The Navajo Times’ primary readership lies within the Navajo Nation and all of its border towns and communities. To seek independence from tribal government ownership, Arviso convinced the Navajo Nation Council to approve the for-profit, incorporation of the Navajo Times, which the tribal council did on October 23, 2003.
Arviso is a former board vice president and treasurer of the Native American Journalists Association’s Board of Directors and is currently a member of the Arizona Newspapers Association’s Board of Directors. In July 1997, Arviso was awarded NAJA’s prestigious “Wassaja Award” for “extraordinary service to Native journalism.” He also is the first and only Native American to have been selected for a Knight Fellowship in journalism. Notes             Allan Dart, executive director of Old Pueblo Archaeology Center will present the lecture "What do we do with our Ancestors," at the Scottsdale Civic Center Library on Wednesday, March 12th at 6:30pm. This Arizona Humanities Council program explores how human remains are treated by people of different cultures, what is done when human remains and grave objects come to light in archaeological excavations, and laws that specify what must be done when human remains are discovered. Dr. Hong Cui's paper submission to the Joint Conference for Digital Libraries (JCDL'2008), entitled "Unsupervised Semantic Markup of Literature for Biodiversity Digital Libraries", is accepted by the JCDL 2008 Program Committee. Her related system demonstration submission to the same conference is under review.

Dr. Patricia Montiel Overall is presenting a paper at the American Educational Research Association in NY at the 2008 Annual Conference (March 2008). The paper is "Effect of Service Learning on Library and Information Science Students? Understanding of Diversity Issues Related to Equity of Access." She is also presenting at the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS) e Society Conference in Portugal (April 2008). Her paper is "Web-Based Learning Communities: A Conceptual Model for Cultural Competence."

Dr. Don Fallis' recent and upcoming presentations include January: "Toward an Epistemology of Wikipedia", Knowledge Rights and Information Sharing in the 21st Century, Orlando, Florida.; March: "What is Lying?", Pacific Division Meeting of the American Philosophical Association, Pasadena, California; and April: "Resolving Horgan's Strengthened Two Envelope Paradox", Central Division Meeting of the American Philosophical Association, Chicago, Illinois.

March 7, 2008: The David Library of the American Revolution offers 1- to 3-month Library Resident Research Fellowships for conducting research in its collections. The Library’s resources in microfilm and print on virtually every aspect of the era of the American Revolution (1750-1800) are fully listed at its web site. The stipend is $1,600/month (plus housing). Both doctoral and post-doctoral applicants are eligible; doctoral candidates must have passed their general examinations before beginning their fellowships. http://www.dlar.org/#Research_Fellowships

March 7, 2008: Two John "Bud" Velde awards of $3,000 are given annually to facilitate a period of extended individual study (usually 1 month or more) in The Rare Book & Manuscript Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The program is open to all active scholars from graduate students to retired professors. The research strengths of the Library are manifold, from medieval to early modern studies, with particular strengths in early printing and printing history, Elizabethan life and letters, John Milton and his age, emblem studies, economic history, early science and natural history, and the papers of modern literary figures such as Carl Sandburg, H.G. March 7, 2008 is the deadline to apply for an Early Career and Student Travel Grant providing support for attending the The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) Annual Meeting in Boston this year. For more infor and to apply, see the web site at http://www.sspnet.org/

March 15, 2008 is the deadline to apply for one of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) 2008 CALA Scholarships. Awards range from $200 to $1000. These scholarships are open to full-time students of Chinese heritage who are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited master's or doctoral program of library and information science at an institution of higher education in North America. March 31, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the William B. Neff Conference Attendance Award, awarded to a student member of the Museums, Arts and Humanities Division of the Special Libraries Association.  The award consists of a stipend of up to $1,000 toward the expense of conference attendance.  Any student member of the Division who is currently enrolled in a graduate library/information science program is eligible.  This award is specifically for conference attendance and the winner is required to attend the 2008 Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington. See http://units.sla.org/division/dmah/Neff%20Scholarship.htm for details.

March 31 2008 is the application deadline: As part of YALSA Unity: A Diversity Initiative, the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association (ALA), will offer two YALSA members with a diverse background a stipend to attend the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif., June 26-July 2. Each sponsorship recipient will receive up to $1,000 for conference expenses. See www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/stipend.cfm.

May 8, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the University of Southern Mississippi British Studies Program LIS 580/587, British Libraries and Information Centers, in summer 2008. Spend four weeks at Kings College in London and at the University of Edinburgh and earn 6 hours of graduate LIS credit. Students will experience on-site lectures by British librarians, archivists, and curators and have time to research approved topics on

April 15, 2008 is the deadline for student category submissions in the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Call for Papers for its annual competition. The objectives of the contest are threefold: 1) to promote scholarship among practicing law librarians and in areas of interest to the profession; 2) to provide a creative outlet for law librarians and a forum for their scholarly activities; and 3) to recognize the scholarly efforts of established members, new members, and potential members of AALL. June 15, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the student papers issue of DttP (Documents to the People), which is designed to showcase the talents and interests of current library school students. Papers should focus on substantive issues in government information at all levels of government (local, state, federal, international) librarianship. Style guidelines are available. DttP is a professional journal. Class papers which do not conform to editorial guidelines should be reformatted to receive consideration. Papers must be nominated and forwarded by a faculty member.

April 4, 2008 is the deadline to apply for a three week intensive three-week intensive writing program for all graduate students focusing on writing projects, theses, and dissertation work.
