Date               Wednesday, January 30, 2008
Time               12:00 pm – 1:30 pm USMST
Where            SIRLS Multipurpose Room
Event Type    Academic Event
Presenter     James Nason (Washington, Anthropology)
Event Title   Archival Ethics and Traditional Knowledge: Micronesian and Native American Responses
Abstract       Native American and indigenous Oceanic communities are examining legal and ethical measures to protect their rights in and control of traditional knowledge, a reaction to the abuse of such rights by outside scholars and writers. These measures include sui generis laws designed to counteract the inappropriate impositions of Western copyright on traditional knowledge, specialized legal research contracts, legal bans on some publications, and calls for the repatriation of significant traditional knowledge materials no longer in community control. This contemporary process presents both researchers and archivists with challenging ethical issues. This discussion will examine these ethical issues using both Federated States of Micronesia and Native American tribal examples, and will specifically address the recently drafted Protocols for Native American Archival Materials, whose purview extends beyond traditional knowledge to include a much broader array of archival data (see www.firstarchivistscircle.org/files/index.html).
Notes             The SIRLS faculty cordially invites students and anyone else interested to attend.
