In order to spread out the pot-luck contributions, here are suggested guidelines: Last names beginning with A-D, bring appetizers or munchies, with E-R main or side dishes, and S-Z desserts. November 30, 2007: The North American Conference on British Studies, in collaboration with the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, offers the $2,000 NACBS-Huntington Library Fellowship to aid in dissertation research in the collections of the library. The amount of the fellowship is $2,000. The time of residence varies, but may be as brief as 1 month. See http://www.nacbs.org/hun.html December 1, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the the BRASS Thompson Financial Student Travel Award for travel to the American Libraries Association’s annual conference, which will be held in Anaheim, CA June 26-July 2, 2008. This includes a cash award of $1,000 for travel expenses incurred at the ALA Annual Conference which would include a one-year membership to ALA/RUSA/BRASS if the recipient is not already a member, and the recipient of the award will be formally invited by the Chair of BRASS to attend BRASS Executive Committee meetings and other BRASS activities. For eligibility and application information, see http://www.sis.utk.edu/files/BRASS_TFSAward.doc December 1, 2007: The Bibliographical Society of America invites applications for its annual short-term fellowship program, which supports bibliographical inquiry as well as research in the history of the book trades and in publishing history. Fellowships offer a stipend of up to $2,000/month for up to 2 month’s support of travel, living, and research expenses. See http://www.bibsocamer.org/fellows.htm December 1, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the Adolescent Literacy Predoctoral Fellowship program of the National Academy of Education, which supports doctoral research aimed at improving literacy outcomes for middle and secondary school students. Fellows will also participate in ongoing training activities to interact with and learn from leading researchers in the field of adolescent literacy and in activities that promote building a community of scholars. Fellows will receive a stipend of $25,000, to be disbursed over a period of up to two years, to support finalizing the dissertation proposal and collecting data. http://www.naeducation.org/Adolescent_Literacy_Pre-Doctoral_Fellowship.html December 2, 2007 is the deadline to apply for The SPARC Discovery Awards, which challenges you to illustrate in a short video presentation what you see as the value of sharing information. December 7, 2007 is the deadline for PhD students to apply for ACRL's award in support of your dissertation. Each year Thomson Scientific funds a $1500 award and provides a plaque for a student doing research in academic librarianship. Criteria are available at http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlawards/doctoraldissertation.htm. Note: You do not need to be enrolled in a library science doctoral program, but can be enrolled in any kind of accredited program as long as your research focus is academic librarianship. Questions? December 14, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the American Printing History Association $2,000 fellowship award for research in any area of the history of printing in all its forms, including all the arts and technologies relevant to printing, the book arts, and letter forms. Applicants need not be academics and an advanced degree is not required.See http://www.printinghistory.org/htm/fellowship/index.htm December 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library which offers short-term fellowships to support visiting scholars pursuing postdoctoral research in its collections. The fellowships pay for travel costs to and from New Haven and a living allowance of $4,000/month. Normally granted for 1 month, fellowships must be taken up between September 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009. http://www.library.yale.edu/beinecke/brbleduc/brblapplyvisiting.html December 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the Cartography and Geographic Information Society Scholarship which offer a $500 Master's Scholarship and a $1,000 Doctoral Scholarship to CaGIS student members for research advancing the disciplines of cartography or GIS rather than research applying GIS or mapping as a technique. http://www.cartogis.org/awards/cagis-scholarships/scholarship December 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for one of The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens approximately 100 residential fellowships for research in British and American literature, history, art history, and the history of science, using materials at the Library. Short-term awards are for 1-5 months for scholars with the Ph.D. or at the dissertation stage and carry monthly stipends up to $2,500. Postdoctoral Fellowships are for 4-12 months with a stipend of $40,000. http://www.huntington.org/ResearchDiv/Fellowships.html December 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for The Group for Early Modern Studies at the UA award of at least one grant for up to $800 in spring, fall, and summer for travel to the Newberry Library in Chicago (http://www.newberry.org/renaissance/renaissancehome.html) or the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC (http://www.folger.edu/index.cfm) to attend a conference or seminar or to conduct research. Funds can also be used to support participation in a Newberry/Mellon Paleography Institute. This grant is open to GEMS graduate students and faculty doing work in early modern studies. Priority will go to GEMS students, other graduate students, and faculty in that order. An individual may receive only one travel award per academic year. Up to 60 awards will be given and special consideration will be given to women of color. See this site for details. December 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for one of three $1,000 scholarships awarded annually by the Medical Library Group of Souther California and Arizona (MLGSCA) to excellent library/information science students who have shown evidence of interest in pursuing the health sciences specialization in librarianship. The scholarship is intended to provide support during a students course of study. The scholarship funds can be used as desired by the recipient. December 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the 3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant, which covers expenses to attend the ALA Annual Conference June 26 to July 2, 2008 in Anaheim, CA. January 31, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the Ingenta Research Award given annually by the Library Research Round Table of the American Library Association to support research projects about acquisition, use, and preservation of digital information. Applications are welcome from practicing librarians, faculty and students at schools of library and information science, and independent scholars. The grant consists of up to $6,000 for research and up to $1,000 for travel to a national or international conference to present the results of the research. Visit the grant website for eligibility, criteria and application information. February 1, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the 2008 Lucille M. Wert Scholarship designed to help persons with an interest in the fields of Chemistry and Information to pursue graduate study in Library, Information, or Computer Science, the Scholarship consists of a $1,500 honorarium. This scholarship is given yearly by the Division of Chemical Information of the American Chemical Society. The applicant must have a bachelor's degree with a major in Chemistry or related disciplines. February 15, 2008 is the deadline to apply for a USA Funds individual scholarships of $1,500, which can be renewed annually up to a total award of $6,000. To qualify, graduate students must be enrolled full-time, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and be able to demonstrate financial need. Applications will be accepted online beginning December 15, 2007. Up to 50% of the scholarships will be targeted to applicants who are members of an ethnic-minority group (Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian, Black/African-American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander) or have a documented physical disability. http://www.usafunds.org/planning/access_to_education_scholarship/index.html March 1, 2008 is the deadline for a number of ALA scholarship opportunities. The American Library Association (ALA) is committed to promoting and advancing the librarian profession. To demonstrate this commitment, the ALA and its units provide more than $300,000 annually for study in a master's degree in library and information studies from an ALA accredited program, or for a master's degree in school library media program that meets the ALA curriculum guidelines for a National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredited unit. March 15, 2008 is the deadline to apply for one of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) 2008 CALA Scholarships. Awards range from $200 to $1000. These scholarships are open to full-time students of Chinese heritage who are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited master's or doctoral program of library and information science at an institution of higher education in North America. May 8, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the University of Southern Mississippi British Studies Program LIS 580/587, British Libraries and Information Centers, in
summer 2008. Spend four weeks at Kings College in London and at the
University of Edinburgh and earn 6 hours of graduate LIS credit.
Students will experience on-site lectures by British librarians,
archivists, and curators and have time to research approved topics on June 15, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the student papers issue of DttP (Documents to the People), which is designed to showcase the talents and
interests of current library school students. Papers should focus on
substantive issues in government information at all levels of government
(local, state, federal, international) librarianship. Style guidelines are available. DttP is a professional journal. Class papers which do not
conform to editorial guidelines should be reformatted to receive
consideration.

Express Retrieval ServiceThe UA Library’s new Express Retrieval service has started! The library will now retrieve items off the library shelves and place them directly on the hold shelf for you to come and pick up. This service is only available to UA faculty, staff and students who have a valid CatCard and a library account in good standing. Books and videos/DVDs can be retrieved from the Main, Science, Fine Arts, and Center for Creative Photography Libraries.
