There is a big line up of presentations and Chris Dodge, AKA "The Street Librarian" and frequent columnist for Utne Magazine will give the keynote address. Dear SIRLS students, faculty, alumni, and friends: Please join us for a wine and cheese reception at the AzLA Conference on Tuesday, Nov 13th, from 5-7pm, in the Marriott Mesa Hotel Lobby Bar. November 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for The Donald A. B. Lindberg Research Fellowship established by MLA to fund research aimed at expanding the research knowledge base of health sciences information management and enhancing the role of health sciences librarians and other information professionals in health care access and delivery, public health, consumer information, health professions education or biomedical research. The endowment will provide a $8,100 grant, awarded by MLA through a competitive grant process, to a qualified health sciences librarian, informatician, health professional, researcher, educator, or health administrator. November 17, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the Art Libraries Society of North America's (ARLIS/NA) Gerd Muehsam Award, which is given annually to recognize excellence in a graduate student paper or project on a topic relevant to art librarianship. This award was established to honor the memory of Gerd Muehsam (1913-1979), distinguished scholar, teacher, and art bibliographer, whose support of and dedication to ARLIS/NA was an inspiration to her colleagues and students. The Award Winner will receive $500.00, up to $300.00 travel reimbursement to attend the ARLIS/NA 36th Annual Conference (Denver, Colorado, May 1-5, 2008), the registration fee to this Conference and a one year membership to ARLIS/NA. November 30, 2007: The North American Conference on British Studies, in collaboration with the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, offers the $2,000 NACBS-Huntington Library Fellowship to aid in dissertation research in the collections of the library. The amount of the fellowship is $2,000. The time of residence varies, but may be as brief as 1 month. See http://www.nacbs.org/hun.html December 1, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the the BRASS Thompson Financial Student Travel Award for travel to the American Libraries Association’s annual conference, which will be held in Anaheim, CA June 26-July 2, 2008. This includes a cash award of $1,000 for travel expenses incurred at the ALA Annual Conference which would include a one-year membership to ALA/RUSA/BRASS if the recipient is not already a member, and the recipient of the award will be formally invited by the Chair of BRASS to attend BRASS Executive Committee meetings and other BRASS activities. December 7, 2007 is the deadline for PhD students to apply for ACRL's award in support of your dissertation. Each year Thomson Scientific funds a $1500 award and provides a plaque for a student doing research in academic librarianship. Criteria are available at http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlawards/doctoraldissertation.htm. Note: You do not need to be enrolled in a library science doctoral program, but can be enrolled in any kind of accredited program as long as your research focus is academic librarianship. Questions? December 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for one of three $1,000 scholarships awarded annually by the Medical Library Group of Souther California and Arizona (MLGSCA) to excellent library/information science students who have shown evidence of interest in pursuing the health sciences specialization in librarianship. The scholarship is intended to provide support during a students course of study. The scholarship funds can be used as desired by the recipient. December 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the 3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant, which covers expenses to attend the ALA Annual Conference June 26 to July 2, 2008 in Anaheim, CA. January 31, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the Ingenta Research Award given annually by the Library Research Round Table of the American Library Association to support research projects about acquisition, use, and preservation of digital information. Applications are welcome from practicing librarians, faculty and students at schools of library and information science, and independent scholars. The grant consists of up to $6,000 for research and up to $1,000 for travel to a national or international conference to present the results of the research. Visit the grant website for eligibility, criteria and application information. February 1, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the 2008 Lucille M. Wert Scholarship designed to help persons with an interest in the fields of Chemistry and Information to pursue graduate study in Library, Information, or Computer Science, the Scholarship consists of a $1,500 honorarium. This scholarship is given yearly by the Division of Chemical Information of the American Chemical Society. The applicant must have a bachelor's degree with a major in Chemistry or related disciplines. March 1, 2008 is the deadline for a number of ALA scholarship opportunities. The American Library Association (ALA) is committed to promoting and advancing the librarian profession. To demonstrate this commitment, the ALA and its units provide more than $300,000 annually for study in a master's degree in library and information studies from an ALA accredited program, or for a master's degree in school library media program that meets the ALA curriculum guidelines for a National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredited unit. June 15, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the student papers issue of DttP (Documents to the People), which is designed to showcase the talents and
interests of current library school students. Papers should focus on
substantive issues in government information at all levels of government
(local, state, federal, international) librarianship. Style guidelines are available. DttP is a professional journal. Class papers which do not
conform to editorial guidelines should be reformatted to receive
consideration.

The course professor, Dr. David Cuillier, is chairman of the national Freedom of Information Committee for the Society of Professional Journalists and researches public attitudes toward government transparency, FOI law, and the state of access in America today.
