The SIRLS Research Brown Bag events are a great way for students to meet and interact with faculty in an informal setting. The next two brown bags feature presentations by SIRLS Professors Don Fallis (10/31) and Martin Frické (11/7). Join them and the rest of the SIRLS faculty at these events. November 1, 2007 is the deadline for students enrolled in an ALA-Accredited Library and Information Science Program or Trainees in Health Sciences Librarianship, Internship or Medical Informatics to submit unpublished bibliographical, issue/topic based, or research results paper or web-based project on health sciences librarianship or research results paper or web-based project on health sciences librarianship or medical informatics for the 2008 Rittenhouse Award competition. Manuscript submission information and procedure links may be found on MLANET's website. November 1, 2007 is the deadline to submit a proposal to the National Science Foundation for the Graduate Research Fellowship Program. The NSF aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,100 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are in the early stages of their graduate study. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) invests in graduate education for a cadre of diverse individuals who demonstrate their potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation. (brochures) November 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for The Donald A. B. Lindberg Research Fellowship established by MLA to fund research aimed at expanding the research knowledge base of health sciences information management and enhancing the role of health sciences librarians and other information professionals in health care access and delivery, public health, consumer information, health professions education or biomedical research. The endowment will provide a $8,100 grant, awarded by MLA through a competitive grant process, to a qualified health sciences librarian, informatician, health professional, researcher, educator, or health administrator. November 17, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the Art Libraries Society of North America's (ARLIS/NA) Gerd Muehsam Award, which is given annually to recognize excellence in a graduate student paper or project on a topic relevant to art librarianship. This award was established to honor the memory of Gerd Muehsam (1913-1979), distinguished scholar, teacher, and art bibliographer, whose support of and dedication to ARLIS/NA was an inspiration to her colleagues and students. The Award Winner will receive $500.00, up to $300.00 travel reimbursement to attend the ARLIS/NA 36th Annual Conference (Denver, Colorado, May 1-5, 2008), the registration fee to this Conference and a one year membership to ARLIS/NA. November 30, 2007: The North American Conference on British Studies, in collaboration with the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, offers the $2,000 NACBS-Huntington Library Fellowship to aid in dissertation research in the collections of the library. The amount of the fellowship is $2,000. The time of residence varies, but may be as brief as 1 month. See http://www.nacbs.org/hun.html December 1, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the the BRASS Thompson Financial Student Travel Award for travel to the American Libraries Association’s annual conference, which will be held in Anaheim, CA June 26-July 2, 2008. This includes a cash award of $1,000 for travel expenses incurred at the ALA Annual Conference which would include a one-year membership to ALA/RUSA/BRASS if the recipient is not already a member, and the recipient of the award will be formally invited by the Chair of BRASS to attend BRASS Executive Committee meetings and other BRASS activities. Fellowships offer a stipend of up to $2,000/month for up to 2 month’s support of travel, living, and research expenses. Each year Thomson Scientific funds a $1500 award and provides a plaque for a student doing research in academic librarianship. Note: You do not need to be enrolled in a library science doctoral program, but can be enrolled in any kind of accredited program as long as your research focus is academic librarianship. Questions? The scholarship is intended to provide support during a students course of study. The scholarship funds can be used as desired by the recipient. March 1, 2008 is the deadline for a number of ALA scholarship opportunities. The American Library Association (ALA) is committed to promoting and advancing the librarian profession. To demonstrate this commitment, the ALA and its units provide more than $300,000 annually for study in a master's degree in library and information studies from an ALA accredited program, or for a master's degree in school library media program that meets the ALA curriculum guidelines for a National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredited unit. June 15, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the student papers issue of DttP (Documents to the People), which is designed to showcase the talents and
interests of current library school students. Papers should focus on
substantive issues in government information at all levels of government
(local, state, federal, international) librarianship. Style guidelines are available. DttP is a professional journal. Class papers which do not
conform to editorial guidelines should be reformatted to receive
consideration.

J. Ferguson Mondays: 1:15-4:00 PM. This seminar explores how American Indians, anthropologists, and lawyers work together in the repatriation of human remains, associated grave goods, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony.
