Student eZineThe Fall 2007 issue of BiblioTech, the online eZine featuring outstanding writing by SIRLS students, is now available. In the best Web 2.0 tradition, BiblioTech has been completely revamped to facilitate user interaction and participation, and you can now subscribe to BiblioTech content via RSS. Previous articles have been ported to the new format and the new design is both functional and attractive. Take a look and then consider submitting an article for the next edition. October 23, 2007 is the deadline to apply for an SBSRI Grant for Graduate Students. The SBSRI invites graduate students from all SBS units (including SIRLS!) to apply for the following grants: November 1, 2007 is the deadline for students enrolled in an ALA-Accredited Library and Information Science Program or Trainees in Health Sciences Librarianship, Internship or Medical Informatics to submit unpublished bibliographical, issue/topic based, or research results paper or web-based project on health sciences librarianship or research results paper or web-based project on health sciences librarianship or medical informatics for the 2008 Rittenhouse Award competition. Manuscript submission information and procedure links may be found on MLANET's website. November 1, 2007 is the deadline to submit a proposal to the National Science Foundation for the Graduate Research Fellowship Program. The NSF aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,100 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are in the early stages of their graduate study. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) invests in graduate education for a cadre of diverse individuals who demonstrate their potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation. (brochures) November 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for The Donald A. B. Lindberg Research Fellowship established by MLA to fund research aimed at expanding the research knowledge base of health sciences information management and enhancing the role of health sciences librarians and other information professionals in health care access and delivery, public health, consumer information, health professions education or biomedical research. The endowment will provide a $8,100 grant, awarded by MLA through a competitive grant process, to a qualified health sciences librarian, informatician, health professional, researcher, educator, or health administrator. November 17, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the Art Libraries Society of North America's (ARLIS/NA) Gerd Muehsam Award, which is given annually to recognize excellence in a graduate student paper or project on a topic relevant to art librarianship. This award was established to honor the memory of Gerd Muehsam (1913-1979), distinguished scholar, teacher, and art bibliographer, whose support of and dedication to ARLIS/NA was an inspiration to her colleagues and students. The Award Winner will receive $500.00, up to $300.00 travel reimbursement to attend the ARLIS/NA 36th Annual Conference (Denver, Colorado, May 1-5, 2008), the registration fee to this Conference and a one year membership to ARLIS/NA. December 1, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the the BRASS Thompson Financial Student Travel Award for travel to the American Libraries Association’s annual conference, which will be held in Anaheim, CA June 26-July 2, 2008. This includes a cash award of $1,000 for travel expenses incurred at the ALA Annual Conference which would include a one-year membership to ALA/RUSA/BRASS if the recipient is not already a member, and the recipient of the award will be formally invited by the Chair of BRASS to attend BRASS Executive Committee meetings and other BRASS activities. December 7, 2007 is the deadline for PhD students to apply for ACRL's award in support of your dissertation. Each year Thomson Scientific funds a $1500 award and provides a plaque for a student doing research in academic librarianship. Criteria are available at http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlawards/doctoraldissertation.htm. Note: You do not need to be enrolled in a library science doctoral program, but can be enrolled in any kind of accredited program as long as your research focus is academic librarianship. Questions? December 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for one of three $1,000 scholarships awarded annually by the Medical Library Group of Souther California and Arizona (MLGSCA) to excellent library/information science students who have shown evidence of interest in pursuing the health sciences specialization in librarianship. The scholarship is intended to provide support during a students course of study. The scholarship funds can be used as desired by the recipient. December 15, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the 3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant, which covers expenses to attend the ALA Annual Conference June 26 to July 2, 2008 in Anaheim, CA. March 1, 2008 is the deadline for a number of ALA scholarship opportunities. The American Library Association (ALA) is committed to promoting and advancing the librarian profession. To demonstrate this commitment, the ALA and its units provide more than $300,000 annually for study in a master's degree in library and information studies from an ALA accredited program, or for a master's degree in school library media program that meets the ALA curriculum guidelines for a National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredited unit. Want to make your own podcast or video blog? SIRLS faculty and students may check out audio and video recording equipment for classes, projects or events. We have a digital audio recorder, a digital camera with some video capability, and a digital video camera with tripod.
