This is a call for interest in membership in the UA student chapter of SLA (Special Libraries Association). SLA is currently without any officers since all of the previous ones have graduated. There is a student group advisor, Leslie Kent Kunkel, but the group is in need of a President, Vice President/Treasurer, Secretary, and Webmaster/Listserv Manager. For anyone planning careers in special libraries (e.g., medical, tribal, law, corporate, etc) this is a great opportunity to learn more about them through participation in this organization. Membership also looks good on your resume! You are invited to the first meeting of the academic year on Friday, Sept 28th, at 6:00pm, in the SIRLS MultiPurpose Room. FREE PIZZA, SODA, and SNACKS will be served! If you are interested, please contact Dana Von Berg or Leslie.
Some SIRLS students and alums have expressed interest in starting a SIRLS group on Facebook, perhaps similar to the one already available on MySpace (or perhaps different). If you are interested and have some ideas about what you think the group might focus on, or if you are interested in being an organizer, send an email to Bruce Fulton.
This is just a reminder that the abstracts to submit for the Symposium are due October 1st. See the story below for additional details

Partners include Alliance Library System, Alliance Second Life Library, TAP Information Services and the new ALA membership group Virtual Communities and Libraries. For a complete list of activities and links, see http://infoisland.org/2007/09/18/ala-celebrates-banned-books-week-in-virtual-worlds/ |
Refworks Walk-in ClinicsThe library is offering walk-in workshops this fall to introduce you to the basics of RefWorks. The workshops will be held in the Main Library, Information Commons Computer Classroom. A112. Sessions will be held on: Choice: Current ReviewsThe UA Library subscribes to the electronic version of Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, a resource that some of you use as part of your classes, but which may interest all of you. Choice Reviews is a “source for reviews of academic books, electronic media, and Internet resources of interest to those in higher education.” You can access Choice Reviews Online through the library web site (www.library.arizona.edu) by clicking on Locate E-Journals and searching for ChoiceReviews, or by searching for the title in the library catalog. A new feature, My Profile, has been added to Choice Reviews! You can set up a profile by subject or LC class and get a monthly email with reviews that meet your criteria. For more info, contact UA LIS librarian Mary Feeney. Library Study CarrelsNeed a quiet place in the library to study and do your research? The UA Library now has study carrels available for short-term use for graduate students. The small study rooms are available in the Main Library.
More information regarding use of the short-term study carrels is available at http://www.library.arizona.edu/services/carrels/shorttermloan.html. LSO Symposium Call for AbstractsThis is just a reminder that the abstracts to submit for the Symposium are due October 1st. Be sure to get your abstracts in, and remember that this is not only a fantastic opportunity to share your stories with your peers but it looks extremely good on your resume. Future employers will be impressed that you’ve delivered a professional presentation prior to graduation. Here’s your chance to present in a low-pressure environment and get your voice and name out there in the library world! All types of presentations are encouraged, as well as poster sessions. You have a choice of 25 or 50 minutes for your session. Feel free to co-present with a colleague, put together a panel, present a training session on a new technology, or use your time to facilitate a discussion with the audience. Creative ideas are more than welcome! Also encourage your peers who have given good presentations in your classes to share them with us. Heck, if you’ve already done the work to create the presentation why not go ahead and do it once more in a professional setting? Photos WantedSeveral people have commented on the flickr photo sets like the this one featuring the SIRLS back to school party. Distance students tell us they enjoy seeing fellow students, faculty, staff and local happenings as a way to keep connected to the SIRLS community. Well, those of us here would like to see what you distance students and virtual instructors are doing as well! Please consider posting photos you can share -- you, where you work or play, the library you use, or where you study -- whatever you feel comfortable with. You can post them to Flickr yourself with tags SIRLS LSO VIRTUAL if you have an account, or email them to our news and calendar contact and we'll make up a photo set. |
