Event Title   Garcetti v. Ceballos and Morse v. Frederick : How Refined Government Speech Doctrine Could Impact Academic Freedom at Public Colleges and Universities
Abstract       In the 21st century, we need to reexamine the legal parameters for academic freedom at public universities and colleges, especially in light of two recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions. These are Garcetti v. Ceballos, which discusses how far an employee can take First Amendment rights in an goverment employment context, and Morse v. Frederick, which raises troubling questions about the extent of free speech rights for students and teachers in public schools.
These come as some in Arizona want to limit the extent of what teachers can say in public classrooms. Also, this talk will look at John Stuart Mill's On Liberty to see if the cases and political efforts match long-standing notions of free expression in democracy.

We have our student group advisor, Leslie Kent Kunkel, but we are in need of a President, Vice President/Treasurer, Secretary, and Webmaster/Listserv Manager. For anyone planning careers in special libraries (e.g., medical, tribal, law, corporate, etc) this is a great opportunity to learn more about them through participation in this organization. Membership also looks good on your resume! You are invited to the first meeting of the academic year next Friday, Sept 28th, at 6:00pm, in the SIRLS MultiPurpose Room. SIRLS students:

Need a quiet place in the library to study and do your research? The UA Library now has study carrels available for short-term use for graduate students. The small study rooms are available in the Main Library.

• Current UA graduate students with a valid CatCard and library account in good standing may use the study carrels.
• Carrels are loaned for a six-hour period on a first-come, first-served basis.
• All carrels are equipped with an Ethernet port and have access to the wireless network.

Attention all SIRLS Students

This is just a reminder that the abstracts to submit for the Symposium are due October 1st, which is in just over two weeks from today!  Be sure to get your abstracts in, and remember that this is not only a fantastic opportunity to share your stories with your peers but it looks extremely good on your resume.  Future employers will be impressed that you’ve delivered a professional presentation prior to graduation.  Here’s your chance to present in a low-pressure environment and get your voice and name out there in the library world!

All types of presentations are encouraged, as well as poster sessions.  You have a choice of 25 or 50 minutes for your session.  Feel free to co-present with a colleague, put together a panel, present a training session on a new technology, or use your time to facilitate a discussion with the audience.  Creative ideas are more than welcome!

Also encourage your peers who have given good presentations in your classes to share them with us.  Heck, if you’ve already done the work to create the presentation why not go ahead and do it once more in a professional setting?

The deadline for submissions is September 23, 2007 at midnight. The issue will be released on or around October 15, 2007.

October 2, 2007 is the deadline to register for a free, one-day seminar on geoscience librarianship will be presented by the Geoscience Information Society on Saturday, October 27, 2007 in Denver. Registration is open to all information professionals as well as students in library and information studies.“Geoscience Librarianship 101” will provide participants with a basic understanding of earth science information resources and their organization. The program is set for 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM in the Jerry B. Robinson Library Instruction Lab, Room 245, Auraria Library, 1100 Lawrence Street, Denver, Colorado. There is no charge for the seminar, but pre-registration is required. Owing to security regulations, no walk-ins will be admitted. Registrations must be received by October 2, 2007. November 1, 2007 is the deadline for students enrolled in an ALA-Accredited Library and Information Science Program or Trainees in Health Sciences Librarianship, Internship or Medical Informatics to submit unpublished bibliographical, issue/topic based, or research results paper or web-based project on health sciences librarianship or research results paper or web-based project on health sciences librarianship or medical informatics for the 2008 Rittenhouse Award competition. November 17, 2007 is the deadline to apply for the Art Libraries Society of North America's (ARLIS/NA) Gerd Muehsam Award, which is given annually to recognize excellence in a graduate student paper or project on a topic relevant to art librarianship. This award was established to honor the memory of Gerd Muehsam (1913-1979), distinguished scholar, teacher, and art bibliographer, whose support of and dedication to ARLIS/NA was an inspiration to her colleagues and students. The Award Winner will receive $500.00, up to $300.00 travel reimbursement to attend the ARLIS/NA 36th Annual Conference (Denver, Colorado, May 1-5, 2008), the registration fee to this Conference and a one year membership to ARLIS/NA. Want to make your own podcast or video blog? SIRLS faculty and students may check out audio and video recording equipment for classes, projects or events. We have a digital audio recorder, a digital camera with some video capability, and a digital video camera with tripod. The University of Arizona is in the process of acquiring its own island in the online virtual world Second Life. The space will be used to support direct instruction and research as well as outreach and recruiting. Over 400 universities are currently conducting classes, doing research, or holding events in Second Life. The UA effort is being coordinated through OSCR and LTC. Now through October 22, 2007, Special Collections and the Main Library at the University of Arizona will display a variety of artist books from the UA library collections. The exhibition is co-curated by Associate Professor Karen Zimmermann, Chair, Visual Communications Division, UA School of Art and Paula Wolfe, Fine Arts and Architecture Librarian. Special Collections is located in the Main Library complex at the corner of Cherry and University Blvd. Viewing hours are M-Th 9am-6pm and 9am-5pm Fridays.
